The Poise brand has chosen reality star Kris Kardashian to participate in their “Great Women in History” series expected to launch this year. The series highlights the fact that many great women throughout history have suffered from a common condition called LBL or Light Bladder Leakage. Jenner admits to her own struggles with LBL, which will affect 1 in 3 women and was inspired by Whoopi Goldberg’s work with the brand. In honor of Women’s History Month in March, Kris portrayed Rosie the Riveter, an American cultural icon.

The representation is meant to symbolize the millions of women who deal with LBL who Jenner says she relates to. “Like millions of women, I have my own experiences with LBL, but I’ve never let it keep me from living life to the fullest,” Jenner stated. “Inspired by the impact that last year’s ‘Great Women in History’ series had on women with LBL, I’ve teamed up with the Poise brand to help women understand that LBL is common and manageable, so it shouldn’t stop them from doing great things and being the incredible and accomplished women they are.”

Poise and Kris are inviting women to leave their own mark on history by visiting 1in3likeme.com to write a caption for Kris’s Rosie photograph that tells the LBL story from Rosie the Riveter’s perspective by sharing their personal stories. Additionally, for every woman that participates, $1 will be donated to the Women’s Health Foundation, an organization committed to championing women’s pelvic health issues. Each woman that submits a caption will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip to a destination featured in the “Great Women in History” series and have her LBL tagline featured with the photo on www.mydaily.com/1in3. {Drug Store News}

Admittedly, this isn’t the first campaign that would come to mind when thinking of which product Jenner might endorse next, but we applaud her candor on a topic that’s not sexy or along the lines of normal brand Kardashian products.

Baby Gaga Breast Milk Ice Cream: If Everyone Jumped https://198.46.88.49/food/baby-gaga-breast-milk-ice-cream-if-everyone-jumped https://198.46.88.49/food/baby-gaga-breast-milk-ice-cream-if-everyone-jumped#respond Thu, 03 Mar 2011 20:29:09 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=18826

We’re sure you’ve heard about the breast milk ice cream that one London shop has had on its menu by now, but yesterday we learned that local officials confiscated all of the supply that was on hand at the store due to health concerns. The ice cream is apparently being sent to be tested for hepatitis contamination. {Los Angeles Times}

In case you missed the news, which has been spreading around radio talk shows, newscasts and Internet blogs for about a week, an artisan shop called Icecreamists in London has been selling ice cream made from human breast milk, dubbed “Baby Gaga” and sold for $22 a scoop. Icecreamists’ owners promise the ice cream, which is made with vanilla and lemon zest, tastes fantastic. {Shape} Apparently someone out there agreed, as the flavor quickly sold out. {Time Out London}

Concerns from England’s Health Protection Agency that the breast milk used to make the ice cream was not properly tested for harmful bacteria resulted in officials confiscating remaining supplies. Shape spoke with Dr. Ruth Lawrence, director of the Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center, told the health and fitness magazine: “The bigger philosophical issue is there are so many small babies and sick babies who desperately need breast milk. If women have milk to give, it would be wonderful to donate it to a milk bank…I suspect the breast milk ice cream contains only trace amounts, anyway.” For what it’s worth, the Icecreamists have maintained that the breast milk used was tested for the same diseases that blood is tested for when donated.

This may be a case where the gross factor is in our heads, but we won’t be trying Baby Gaga any time soon. Sure, we know where the milk in stores comes from, and cow milk might have an ick factor for some. Still, ingesting anything that contains even a sliver of something that was secreted from another human’s body is just too disgusting. Once you’re past a few months old, breast milk should be out of the question. Plus, $22 for a scoop of what amounts to cleverly marketed baby food exceeds our budget range.

The Icecreamists are known for clever names like Sex Bomb and the Vanilla Monologues, but we aren’t sure about this one. We first heard of the product via a tweet that said something about Baby Gaga but didn’t say what Baby Gaga was, so we thought Lady Gaga was pregnant or showing off pictures from when she was a child. Incorporating the name of one of the world’s biggest pop stars, while good for grabbing the attention of Gaga fans via vague headlines, doesn’t seem like it’s all that great for creating a distinct brand identity. With a forthcoming Lady Gaga scent tapping blood and semen for inspiration {Fashionista} and the Lady’s propensity for outfits from the butcher, it’s probably not the kind of association that helps sell people on body fluids as ingredients anyway. On their Facebook page, the Icecreamists say they have a revamped baby formula version ready to roll. Might we suggest a re-naming party to celebrate?

What’s the Skinny on the New Diet Pepsi Cans? https://198.46.88.49/food/whats-the-skinny-on-the-new-diet-pepsi-cans https://198.46.88.49/food/whats-the-skinny-on-the-new-diet-pepsi-cans#respond Tue, 25 Jan 2011 12:54:50 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=18003 Press releases announcing the new Diet Pepsi Skinny Can, which is similar to a large Red Bull can and will hit shelves this March, were sent around last week, and blogs like Fashionista and Racked NY have claimed that Diet Pepsi must be angling to replace Diet Coke as the fashion industry’s drink of choice. They’re probably right, considering the folks touting this new branding effort are tossing around words like “fashionable,” “accessory,” and most important “skinny,” but we don’t exactly see the point of trying to change the minds of a group that is notoriously hard to sway.

Diet Pepsi has plenty going for it as a 0 calorie, carb and sugar drink. The marketers behind it would be better off keeping it simple and pushing the Skinny Can (which is 12 oz., the same size as a normal soda can) to those looking to lose weight or quit drinking unhealthy soda, rather than those who already have a diet soda favorite. Call us stupid, but until sampling a six-pack of the Diet Pepsi Skinny Cans, we had no idea that Diet Pepsi tastes almost exactly like regular Pepsi. We can’t say the same for Diet Coke, which leaves a funky after-taste. Perhaps a money-back guarantee if it doesn’t taste like regular Pepsi would be a better hook than sending press releases and samples to fashion bloggers.

Now, switching to diet soda does have its downsides. For one, past studies have shown that those who drink diet soda tend to actually gain more weight because they think choosing a healthier soda means they can eat more. {CBS  News} Not to mention the fact that it is still, after all, soda. Though with Starbucks introducing ever larger cups (the better to accentuate the ever more minimal logo) that not so subtly encourage you to drink more iced coffee, tea or lemonade than some adult stomachs have room for, the mind trick of a taller, skinnier can that doesn’t actually contain any more soda than normal might not be so bad.

If you’re looking to improve your soda habits, and you know you’ll be able to simply substitute in Diet Pepsi for regular Pepsi, we highly recommend the product (though, oddly enough, the new can – a.k.a. the reason we were sent a product sample in the first place – really has nothing to do with our recommendation). But if you’re a water-drinker or you know you like to bargain with your diet, we’d say skip it. And if you’re a member of the fashion cult, rest assured you can keep sucking down the Diet Coke. We doubt Diet Pepsi will take over the fashion world just because of the Skinny Can. The one thing fashion loves more than skinny is its comfort zone.

Daphne Guiness Takes on Tracksuits and Unhealthy Round Bodies https://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/daphne-guiness-takes-on-tracksuits-and-unhealthy-round-bodies https://198.46.88.49/style/fashion/daphne-guiness-takes-on-tracksuits-and-unhealthy-round-bodies#respond Fri, 23 Jul 2010 13:52:15 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=14538 The Daily Mail caught up with Daphne Guinness at a party in Mayfair, and the well-known heiress to the Guinness brewing fortune had some interesting comments on current fashion and body health trends. Guinness has made quite a few fashion headlines recently as the face of Nars Cosmetics’ fall campaign and savior to Isabella Blow’s prized wardrobe collection, but the 42-year-old daughter of Lord Moyne is apparently appalled by the way people dress and their extreme silhouettes.

Guiness is not a fan of the tracksuit look...

“You can tell the state of civilization by the way people dress,” she said. “If the people who fought two World Wars came back to 2010 and saw all of us running around in tracksuits, what would they think? It is just being sloppy. And it is not about the money, it is a mindset.”

We think Guinness has a point. Walk down any New York City street on any given day and you are bound to see tons of sloppy-looking pedestrians. We all have days where comfort clothes are more appealing than structured clothing, but there are limits. Particularly when it comes to what you wear to work, how you present yourself is a big part of how you are perceived. In this economy, every little bit of self-marketing may help you to keep your job – unless you work at Citibank, but that’s another story.

Guinness also said she’s not a fan of unhealthy round bodies.

“I have nothing against people who are round,” she said. “I am far too thin, for example. I’d really love to put on a few pounds. But I certainly think some people look tremendously unhealthy — and quite unhappy actually.”

Amen. We know a lot is made of the too-thin images of women we see in the media, and all of that is warranted given that being seriously underweight can be as unhealthy as being seriously overweight.  But Guinness may be on the mark about heavier people being unhappy. A recent Dutch study found that obesity increases the risk of depression by 55 percent. {Reuters}

One of the doctors involved noted “[being] overweight and obesity, can induce low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction, especially in Western countries where thinness is often considered a beauty ideal. Both low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction are known to increase the risk of depression.”

While fashion only goes so far, perhaps more stylish options for larger sizes would help with both problems. We’ve said before and we’ll continue to say, not everyone is meant to have the same shape. Some people are naturally thin and perfectly healthy, some people are naturally fat and perfectly healthy, and there are plenty of healthy and unhealthy shapes in between the two ends. And at all ranges of the size spectrum, there are people who are never satisfied with their bodies. Celebrating different body types as beautiful through flattering clothing may seem superficial, but it would be a start.

FYI, Daphne, you’re beautiful, and if you’re just not meant to pick up any more pounds we like you as you are.

Eat Right 4 Your Type : Another Day, Another Bloody Diet https://198.46.88.49/food/eat-right-4-your-type-another-day-another-bloody-diet https://198.46.88.49/food/eat-right-4-your-type-another-day-another-bloody-diet#comments Mon, 31 May 2010 18:07:10 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=11754 Atkins. South Beach. Best Life. Jenny Craig.

What do these 4 names have in common? If you haven’t already guessed it, they are the names of some of the most famous diet plans. For many years, celebrities have sworn by these diets and their effectiveness in aiding the quest to stay in shape.

In the last 10 years, another diet regime has been steadily gaining popularity among celebrities like Courtney Cox-Arquette and Demi Moore – The Blood Type Diet. Recently, UK singer and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole became the latest celebrity to advocate the diet plan in an interview with Hello Magazine.

So what exactly is this Blood Type Diet?

The Blood Type Diet was first introduced in a book entitled Eat Right 4 Your Type, written by Peter D’Adamo, a naturopathic physician in 1997. The premise of this diet is that people should plan their food intake around their blood type because the Lectins that exist in all types of food react differently with different blood types. D’Adamo further explains in his book that reactions with these Lectins are harmful for the body. In order to prevent this, it is important for individuals to select foods which can minimize these reactions.

Sounds good? Well, at least not according to some medical experts.

These experts typically agree that there is absolutely no scientific relationship between our blood group and the food we eat. Another concern of theirs was that the diets recommended for some blood groups are limited and cut out major groups of foods, which can result in a poor intake of nutrients required for good health. {Weight Loss Resources}

Yet, this has not deterred celebrities like Cheryl Cole, from singing praises of the Blood Type Diet. Cole revealed to Hello Magazine, that the plan “has made such a difference – not so much to my shape, but to how I feel and my energy levels. Before I was like ‘energy schmenergy’ and didn’t believe it. But now I believe it 100 per cent.” {Healthy Hollywood}

Oprah Winfrey once said, “Diets don’t work.” Perhaps, that is the truth. Perhaps, there just is no such thing as THE perfect diet.

Halloween Face Paint: Trick Or Treat? https://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/halloween-face-paint-trick-or-treat https://198.46.88.49/style/beauty/halloween-face-paint-trick-or-treat#respond Fri, 30 Oct 2009 16:30:15 +0000 http://198.46.88.49/?p=4765 Before you paint yourself (or your little ones) up with slap before going out for the night on Halloween, be sure to take a careful look at the ingredients in all that makeup.

According to a report from The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, several types of face paints have been found to contain trace levels of lead and metals like nickel and cobalt, which are proven allergens — even on products labelled as non-toxic.

By all means be wild and creative this Halloween season, but remember that health and safety are much more important.  We recommend using reputable brands backed up with positive reviews and honest labels: a good start would be makeup-artist-grade theatrical makeup, which will be more costly but much better for you in the long run.
