Spring 2010: The Return Of Sportswear

Fashion has been responding to the recession in a dichotomy of ways this spring runway season: on one hand there is the hyper-feminine superwoman of Chanel and Gaultier, and on the other there is the stripped-down utilitarianism of Céline and Stella McCartney.

Instead of trying to forget about the world’s problems by swathing themselves in yards and yards of confectionary lace, some women will choose to respond to the chaos of the world head-on by going back to basics – yet these aren’t your mother’s conservative twin-sets, either.  The new breed of sportswear is still effortlessly chic as usual, but this time with a quiet confidence to help us along as we step out into this still-uncertain world.
