iPads Given to New Oklahoma State Students to Test Educational Use

iPads Given to New Oklahoma State Students to Test Educational Use thumbnail

Back when the first Kindle launched, and especially last year with the release of the Kindle DX, there was always much speculation about how well eBooks will work in education. For years we’ve also seen a number of tablets shown off with educational uses. Now it looks like Oklahoma State University will be testing out the ecuational uses of the iPad.

Students enrolled in classes in the School of Media and Strategic Communications and the Spears School of Business will be given iPads for their classes. Those classes will use eTextbooks on the iPads in lieu of traditional dead-tree textbooks. According to the school, the ePub version of at least one class’s textbook is $100 cheaper than the paper version. Not sure how that adds up given that there’s no such thing a a used eTextbok, but it’s still quite a bit cheaper. If all the eTextbooks prove that much cheaper, the 16 GB iPad essentially pays for itself. Add in everything else the iPad can do, and it’s even better for students. {Wired Epicenter}

Okay Steve, we know there’s an app for everything, but wouldn’t an old fashioned receipt really suffice for getting iPhone 4 users set up with a free case or refund? Apparently not.

If you own an iPhone 4, and you don’t want to take special phone holding classes to prevent the “Death Grip” problem from occurring, you can now download an app that will allow you to select a bumper case after you’ve signed in.

On July 22, it was announced that British designer Stella McCartney will design the uniforms for the UK’s 2012 Olympic team. This is the first time such a well known designer has been granted the honor of designing for the Olympics.

Going for long runs during the lazy days of summer is one thing when the sun shines day and night (figuratively speaking). But what do you do if you’re a dedicated pavement pounder in the metro area with winter fast approaching and daylight dwindling? It is a pretty obvious idea that has never looked better.

Finding Flights Via Twitter? What Will They Think of Next?

Finding Flights Via Twitter? What Will They Think of Next? thumbnail

In the realm of desperation and seemingly sensible marketing, United Airlines took to Twitter last year in an effort to fill seats that would normally be empty.

Airlines look at flight data from the past few years to determine which flights at various times of the year flew with a large number of empty seats. They then section off seats from the same flight in the coming year for “Twares”, and tweet about the lower fare on these seats. The idea is good one: United seems to sell out all their Twares in a relatively short amount of time. But customers looking for a Tware have to pay close attention to the United Airlines Twitter account, as a Tware tweet is about as common as an authentic Chanel bag in Chinatown.

The Daily Mail caught up with Daphne Guinness at a party in Mayfair, and the well-known heiress to the Guinness brewing fortune had some interesting comments on current fashion and body health trends. Guinness has made quite a few fashion headlines recently as the face of Nars Cosmetics’ fall campaign and savior to Isabella Blow’s prized wardrobe collection, but the 42-year-old daughter of Lord Moyne is apparently appalled by the way people dress and their extreme silhouettes.

Verizon Smartphones: Tech Under $50

Verizon Smartphones: Tech Under $50 thumbnail

Smartphones can be pretty expensive. The monthly contracts tack on more fees (and services) than feature phones, which add up over time. Even at the outset, they are also quite expensive. Phones like the previous version of the iPhone (currently the 3GS) are selling for $99, but there are still a lack of smartphones in the $100 or less category. Unlike wine, vintage technology is rarely in demand, but if you’re willing to sacrifice some of the latest and greatest features, there are a few decent phones to be had at a relative bargain.

Natalie Massenet Has a Simple Fix to Correct the Fashion Cycle

Have you ever wondered why designers are showing spring and summer clothes in September or October, and winter clothes in February or March? During a livestream interview with Imran Amed of the Business of Fashion, the question was posed to Natalie Massenet of Net-a-Porter who suggested that everyone just skip a season, bring the shows directly to consumers who would be able to purchase the clothes weeks, instead of months, later and get rid of the front row in exchange for trade shows.
