“Coco Before Chanel,” which opens in the U.S. on Friday, is a portrayal of the French designer’s early life. Audrey Tautou, who will portray Chanel, says of the designer, “Her personality and desire to have the same freedom as men, not to depend on them, is exactly what we’ve been fighting for.” She also stated that as an actress she didn’t want to do an entire biographical film about Coco’s life, but rather take the veil off of a “brilliant woman, so unconventional, special and charismatic.” Though Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel’s current creative director, has previously commented that Tautou wouldn’t be his first choice for an advertising campaign, we’re excited to see what she will bring to the role.
