French Vogue crosses line with contemporary blackface

Europe isn’t quite at the same helm of  racial taboos as America, but the October issue of French Vogue may have crossed the line even for European standards. The issue dedicated to models  is completely devoid of any “women of color” with the exception of Dutch model Lara Stone in dark body paint in “ethnic” attire. Beckoning the question, why paint when their are plenty of women that can fulfill the striking image while bringing authentic culture to the spread? Though some may defend this layout as artistic, we still can’t help notice the similarities to historical examples of  “black face”. As one reader stated “They couldn’t have figured out any other type of spread…its 2009!”
