Facebook Posts Replace Sweaters on Chairs for Confirmation of Fake Girlfriends

Sometimes you hear about a company and wonder “why didn’t I think of that?” because they’re such obviously good ideas (see: Groupon). Then there are the companies that make you go “why didn’t I think of that?” because the idea itself isn’t all that great, but you know some dimwit will pay for it anyway (see: the Pet Rock): Cloud Girlfriend seems to be one of those companies.

Gawker just reported on the bizarre story of an aspiring YouTube celebrity who wasn’t content to harass a blogger on his own, and subsequently created a fake girlfriend to join in. There were tweets, there were multiple social network accounts involved and lots of images of an unwitting Korean woman who doubled as the fictional Japanese girlfriend.

Enter Cloud Girlfriend.

The startup is coy on how much the service will cost, but now guys who need fake girlfriends for whatever reason will no longer have to steal Facebook photos and troll the internet to create their own fictional accounts.

Co-founder David Fuhriman tells Business Insider that the company will use real people (note: people, not women) to interact with people on Facebook. He figures it will help guys land real girlfriends if it convinces other female friends “someone else thinks highly enough of this person to date him, so maybe I should to.” Or it could, you know, signal to anyone potentially interested that you’re off the market.

Fuhriman said the site has a therapeutic value and can fulfill psychological needs like intimacy and friendship even though the interaction is virtual. He also maintains that these interactions can even build self confidence and help users navigate real-life situations. {Business Insider}

By real life situations, we’re assuming he means navigating the racks of a clothing store for the perfect sweater to hang on the back of an empty chair.
