Sylvester Stallone, Menswear Designer

Because it’s such a difficult challenge for men to find hoodies, sweatpants, tank tops and cargo pants, Sylvester Stallone is entering the menswear design arena with a clothing line inspired by his characters in Rocky and Rambo.

The eponymous Stallone lifestyle line will offer jeans, shirts, outerwear, underwear and watches for “the rebel and the gentleman,” with rebellious and gentlemanly eyewear, grooming products, fragrance, activewear and athletic shoes to follow.

Though the target customer is a 25 to 40-year-old man, the 64-year-old Stallone wants “clothing that will be appropriate to my generation, or the generation before.” {WWD}

Pricing for the line hasn’t been announced, but distribution is planned for mid-market retailers like Macy’s where the vast majority of menswear is priced at $150 or less.

While celebrities as designers can be hit or miss, Gwen Stefani and Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen have received high marks for their respective lines, and P. Diddy picked up a CFDA award for his Sean John label.

Though Kanye West’s fashion ambitions are well documented, Stallone observes that there’s a dearth of male celebrities willing to try their hand at design compared to celebrity women.

“Maybe a lot of them dress for the films they’re in and they don’t want to be a slave to fashion or they’re more casual,” Stallone says. “But I think there’s room for both and it’s not being represented, especially in my age group. But for me, this is about challenging myself and sharing my experiences.”

We’re still not sure how far you can push sweats and tank tops sartorially speaking, but we applaud the fact that the line will at least be somewhat affordable and that Stallone seems to be hands on.
